The book “Island at the Edge of the World, the Story of St. Kilda.” came in the mail today, thanks to Malcolm, director of Street Level Photoworks, who foresaw that it would be in my line of interest. Few minutes into the introduction and I was already fully captivated by the strange and sad story of St. Kilda.
St. Kilda is the westernmost archipelago of Scotland isolated in the North Atlantic Ocean. Its inhabitants were autonomous for thousands of years, living in symbiosis with the many birds living on the islands. Contact with inland civilization brought permanent cultural change in the society, as well as carrying diseases to which people and animals on the island had never been exposed. The population declined and was evacuated in 1930; an event that was kept secret by the state until the 1970s.
People left, birds remained.

Merci à Malcolm, directeur à Street Level Photoworks qui s’est douté qu’il serait d’intérêt. Quelques lignes auront suffi pour piquer ma curiosité de l’étrange et triste histoire de St Kilda.
St Kilda est un archipel d’îles situées au point le plus à l’ouest de l’Écosse, isolé dans l’océan Atlantique Nord. Ses habitants y ont vécu de manière autonome pendant des milliers d’années, subsistant grâce à une symbiose particulière avec la population aviaire de l’île. Les contacts avec la civilisation extérieure provoquèrent des changements culturels importants au sein de la communauté, en plus de contaminer les animaux et les habitants de maladies auxquelles ils n’avaient jamais été exposés. La population de St Kilda déclina et l’île fut évacuée en 1930, un événement que l’état a gardé secret jusque dans les années 70.
Les hommes ont quitté, les oiseaux sont restés.
