There will be no pictures
Slowly but surely, my portrait project is coming along. One session a day, sometimes two. Finding subjects is one thing, finding locations is another, but an interesting quest in itself. Going from place to place, in the suburbs and the outskirts of Glasgow is sometimes an adventure. Getting there is just as important, interesting and a revelation as the destination.
The first two subjects were young boys on the ferry, going and coming back from Arran Island. Rapid encounters on the deck of the ship. One of them was pretty good with a young polish boy who lives in Glasgow. But the first real appointment was with Jemma, a young photo student in Glasgow. She lives outsides of the city so we agreed that we would do the portraits in my building because of the nice light here. Silent poses, a session full of interiority.
The second session was with Joanne, at a bus station outside the city center, in the middle of nowhere, besides a very busy motorway. This non-place which started out as a challenge rapidly became a real asset, a place to invent, outside of everything. Joanne had answered the call for participants on the Street Level Photoworks Facebook page. This morning the session with Emma was in a supermarket in Paisley, a 15 minutes train ride out of Glasgow. Emma works there, so we had permission to do the portraits in the alleys all around the store.
It was somewhat of a challenge for space and light. She also answered the call on Facebook.
Finally, today, a second session with Liam, 20 years old, another photo student. We did the portraits in the remains of the old Glasgow maternity hospital.
But even if the temptation is high, there will not be any pictures of this posted on this blog or anywhere else for that matter. Only details of the places where the sessions took place will be shown. Social media can just be so … unsocial sometimes, so brutal to people. I decided to keep the pictures specificly for the exhibition of the four participants of the Lightwave residency at the Street Level Photoworks gallery from September 22 to November 25, 2018. The show will also be up in Québec city, at VU, from October 22 till December 2.
I have to thank all these young people participating freely in my project. Every participant will be given a print of a chose image at the end of the month.

Depuis quelques jours, mon projet de portraits avance, lentement mais surement. Un portrait par jour, parfois deux. Trouver des sujets, c’est une chose, trouver les lieux s’en est une autre. Aller de rendez-vous en rendez-vous c’est aussi une aventure vers les banlieues et les périphéries de Glasgow. Le voyage est aussi important, aussi intéressant et révélateur que la destination.
Les deux premiers sujets furent de jeunes garçons sur le ferry, en allant et au retour de l’île d’Arran. L’un d’eux est plutôt intéressant à la dernière image; c’était un jeune polonais, vivant à Glasgow. Mais le premier vrai rendez-vous fut avec Jemma. Elle vit à l’extérieur de la ville, alors nous avons convenu qu’elle serait photographiée ici, dans l’immeuble où j’habite pour la qualité de la lumière qu’on y trouve. Des poses silencieuses, une session toute en intériorité et en délicatesse.
Le second rendez-vous a eu lieu à la périphérie de la ville, à un arrêt d’autobus, à un important carrefour. Un non-lieu avec il fallait composer rapidement mais qui s’est avéré fort intéressant. Un site à l’extérieur de tout. Joanne avait répondu à la petite annonce sollicitant des participants sur la page Facebook de Street Level Photoworks. Ce matin, c’était au tour d’Emma, la copine de Joanne, toutes deux étudiantes en art à Glasgow. Emma travaille dans un supermarché à Paisley (15 minutes en train de Glasgow). Nous avons donc fait les portraits dans les allées du supermarché. Un autre défi d’espace et de lumière.
Finalement, aujourd’hui cet après-midi c’était au tour de Liam, un jeune garçon de Glasgow, 20 ans, étudiant en photographie. La session avait lieu dans les restes architecturaux de l’ancien hôpital de maternité de Glasgow.
Et même si la tentation est grande, je ne vous montrerai pas les images, seulement les lieux, des détails de ces lieux. Les médias sociaux étant souvent ravageurs, je choisi de ne pas montrer leurs visages ici. Et puis, la révélation ne se fera qu’à l’exposition, le 22 septembre à Glasgow, jusqu’au mois de 25 novembre- et à Québec du 22 octobre au 2 décembre, au Centre Vu.
